High School STEAM
Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math
At Avail Academy, we've enhanced the traditional STEM framework by incorporating the Arts, transforming it into STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math). STEAM blends scientific/technical skills with the creativity and soft skills that foster collaboration and problem-solving. We nurture critical thinkers equipped to make meaningful contributions to God’s world.
We encourage students to wonder, experiment, and explore God’s intricate creation. In our STEAM Laboratory, students can innovate, explore, and delve into their role as active stewards of God’s Kingdom. Kindergarten through 8th grade students read, write, discuss, ponder, and proactive science.
Upper-level STEAM Coursework includes:
Lab-based Concepts of Biology (eligible for college credit)
Lab-based Environmental Science (eligible for college credit)
AP Chemistry
AP Physics
Introduction to Engineering
Robotics and Automation
Special Projects, Big Impact
Mussel Research Project
Alongside the University of Minnesota, Avail students conduct field research, reporting on a native mussel called Fatmucket, which are native mussels key to filtering Minnesota streams. Students conduct lab work studying the impact of salinity levels on the mussels’ ability to reproduce.
Citizen Science Projects
The projects have included salt monitor of the Coon Creek Watershed District, seed collection with the Three Rivers Parks for prairie restoration, and buckthorn removal with Anoka County.
Solar Suitcase Project
Students delve into electricity, solar energy, and engineering as they design and build solar-powered systems capable. Completed solar suitcase are sent to refugee camps in Uganda, where it provides essential power for education and connectivity.
Engineering, Robotics, and Automation
Through hands-on learning courses, students are introduced to the engineering and design processes. They develop skills in computer-assisted design, robotocs, and automation using CAD programs, Legos, and more.
